Edo Guber: INEC Halts Registration Of Parties Nominees

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday announced the closure of the portal meant for the registration of political parties’ candidates for the Edo governorship election.

The Commission shut down the portal as it approached the set deadline of June 29.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Festus Okoye dismissed extension of the deadline, noting that the portal was coming down at 6:00pm.

Uncertain about the number of political parties that met the deadline, Okoye gave the assurance that the details of the parties’ nominations for the election would be made public later.

He said: “The portal for submission was closed on Monday at 6:00 p.m. For now, I cannot confirm the number of parties that meet up with the deadline, but I should be able to do that by tomorrow (Tuesday).

“We will process all the nominations tonight and by tomorrow we will make it public.”

In an attempt to adopt technological methods in its operations, INEC had earlier in the preparation of the September 19 election in Edo state opened up a portal on which political parties will make entries of information of their candidates.

Last week, the chairman of the commission, Mahmood Yakubu gave a stern warning to the 15 participating political parties to conduct their primary election within a period of 10 days to ensure they meet up with the deadline because the commission will adhere strictly to all guidelines and stipulated dates.
